Cash App is a payment app that’s similar to Venmo, but it has more features. For example, Cash App allows you to invest in stocks and send and receive money without paying any fees. I’ll explain how to use it below!
Step 1. Get the Cash App
- Go to the App Store or Google Play, and search for “Cash App”.
- Download it, and follow the onboarding process.
- You are done! Congratulations on downloading Cash App!
Step 2. Confirm your bank account
Once you’ve identified the person or business you want to send money, you can proceed with the transaction.
On your Cash App home screen, tap the dollar sign next to their name or profile pic in order to begin sending them money. You will then be taken to a screen where you will see options for how much money you want to send or request from that person. Enter your bank account number and routing number into their corresponding fields. You can also choose how long you want your transfer to take place—there are two options:
Instant or Same Day (note: there is no fee for using Instant). If it’s an important payment and time isn’t an issue, choose Same Day; otherwise, select Instant if speed is more important than paying extra fees on top of using Cash App in general.
Once everything has been entered correctly—and before proceeding with any transfer—make sure that both “Receive Money?” checkboxes are checked off so that both parties involved know exactly what they need from each other before going through with anything further (this prevents confusion down the line). You will then see how much each individual party needs from one another; just confirm this amount by tapping “Done!”
Step 3. Add a payment method
To add a payment method, you will be prompted to enter your debit card information, bank account information, and credit card information. If you have a PayPal account, Venmo, or any other mobile app that allows users to send cash or make payments with their phones, you can also use these apps on the Cash App. Click on the box that says “Add PayPal” or “Add another way to pay” and select the option that best fits your needs from the drop-down menu.
Step 4. Send money
To send money, tap the blue ‘+’ icon in the upper right corner of your screen. If you don’t see this option, select Cash Card from the main menu and tap Send Money.
Enter a dollar amount or choose how much of your balance you want to send by tapping on “Amount” and then entering an amount. Tapping on “Friends” will allow you to select a friend or family member from any contact list in your phone’s address book. Selecting “Businesses & Charities” will display all businesses with their own Cash App accounts, as well as charities that accept payments through PayPal Here (the name of Square’s payment platform).
Once selected, enter your recipient’s email address or phone number into one of three fields: Recipient Name (first name only), Recipient Phone Number (with area code), or Email Address. If entering an email address, be sure it is formatted correctly with no spaces between words; otherwise, they may be inadvertently deleted during transmission. A final box allows users to enter a short message if they wish — this can be helpful if sending money becomes part of your regular routine!
When satisfied with all information entered into these fields, click “Send Now” at the bottom-right corner of this box—or press Enter on your keyboard if using the web version—and confirm everything is correct before proceeding further by clicking “Yes! Send Money Now!”
Step 5. Request money
You can also request money from your friends and family. When you request money, the receiver will receive an email notification that they have a request waiting for them. They’ll have to deposit money into your account before being able to transfer it back to their own accounts.
To request funds:
- In the Cash app, tap Requests (left side).
- Tap Request Money on top of the screen.
Once you’ve completed these steps, anyone with whom you’ve shared your unique code can send money directly into your account!
Step 6. Invest in stocks
Now that you’ve gotten all the basics down, it’s time to put your cash to work. You can invest in stocks with Cash App, which is a great way to grow your money over time.
You can buy and sell stocks from within the same app. Once you’ve set up a brokerage account with Cash App, go to “investments” on the menu bar, then tap “stocks” at the bottom of your screen. From there, just follow these easy steps:
- Click on “Invest” (in green text).
- Click on any one of our recommended portfolios or any other portfolio that interests you (we talk about this below).
- Enter how much money you want to invest along with which type of brokerage account (eTrade vs Robinhood vs Ally Invest), and how often we should reinvest dividends if applicable.
We recommend eTRADE because they offer commission-free trades when using their app and mobile website but also provide access through desktop computers at no additional cost beyond what would be associated with trading stocks outside of eTRade’s ecosystem—a huge plus considering many brokerages charge anywhere from $8-$15 per trade just for using their platform! If interested in switching over right away however please contact us directly via email before doing so as some users may need assistance getting set up correctly first.”
